“Shana tova umetukah, a good and sweet year” – the traditional Jewish greeting at Rosh HaShanah, the Jewish New Year, is accompanied by the practice of eating apples dipped in honey.

This year, however, will be different for an American-Israeli friend of mine.  Breaking from tradition, he will bathe his apples in maple syrup – Canadian maple syrup – out of appreciation for Canada’s principled stand regarding Iran (see iBlog September  9, 2012).

“Your decision constitutes an example of leadership and morality,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in a phone conversation last night. “It is an example of the correct message the international community needs to send to Iran.”

In light of the bitter realities of a region growing in hostility towards the interests of the free world, Canada’s friendship with Israel may have added a welcomed sweetness to temper the looming uncertainties of the year ahead.
