November 21, 2019, left a black blotch on Canada’s national identity.

After a decade of voting ‘no’ to UN resolutions with an anti-Israel bias, Canada joined the 165 nations who voted ‘yes’ to the resolution entitled, “The right of the Palestinian people to self-determination” at the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee. Canada choose not to join Australia, Guatemala, and the seven other nations who abstained. Instead, we parted ways with the U.S. who, days before, had reversed its policy, and declared that Israeli settlements built in Biblical Judea and Samara are — wait for it — legitimate and legal. According to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, “The establishment of the Israeli civilian settlements in the West Bank is not per se inconsistent with international law.” Hooray USA!

Canada, however, crossed the aisle and now stands with the nations urging for both “an end to Israeli occupation” and for the preservation of “territorial unity, contiguity and integrity of all of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.” Did you catch that? The Canadian government is advocating the division of Jerusalem.

Is this a big deal? Oy, yes!

According to Genesis 12:3, God told Abraham, “I will bless those who bless you (Israel) and curse those who treat you with contempt.” To accuse Israel of illegally “occupying” its Biblical heartland, Judea and Samaria, and to be advocating the division of Jerusalem, Canada did not bless Israel. The decision to vote against Israel at the U.N. punctures Canada’s spiritual protection, and could, in the days to come welcome trouble to our shores.

The Bible also teaches that one reaps what one sows. By advocating the division of Israel’s land, Canada has opened its’ door specifically to division at a time in our history when we are particularly vulnerable. As a result of our recent elections, the separatist party — Bloc Québécois — has grown in popularity in French Canada, and factions in our western provinces threaten to follow suit.

We read in Joel chapter three, that when all is said and done, the Lord will gather the nations of the world (represented by their armies) in the valley of Jehoshaphat and there He will, “… judge them for harming my people, my special possession, for scattering my people among the nations, and for dividing up my land.”

Nations will be judged, first and foremost, by what they did or didn’t do for God’s special possession – the land and the people of Israel. Canada is entering into dangerous territory, into the valley of judgement, for it’s position at the U.N.

As dire as this sounds, all is not hopelessly lost. Wonderfully, the Lord promises to forgive and heal one’s land when the people repent. The dark blotch that has marked November 20, 2019 can be erased if we pray.

“… if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

Now would be the time to get on our knees, repent, and pray for the nation.

O Canada we stand on guard for thee!
