In 12 hours (midnight Wednesday, May 29 – Israel time) Prime Minister Netanyahu must present a coalition government to Israeli President Reuvin Rivlin. As of this moment, he will be unable to do so.

If by midnight, he fails in the task assigned to him on election night, one of the following will take place:

1. Re-Election in 90 days, with an uncertain outcome.

2. President Rivlin may choose to assign the job of forming a coalition to another candidate, such as Benny Gantz, the leader of Blue White – the party which won the same amount of votes as Netanyahu’s Likud Party on election night. This would end Netanyahu’s prime ministership.

This is Decision Day in Israel. And an unprecedented one. Never before has an incumbent Israeli leader been unable to cobble together a coalition, after an election. And never before has an incumbent “sitting” PM been personally faced with an uncertain future as criminal charge proceedings are scheduled to take place this October. Failure to form a coalition government by tonight’s deadline would be a huge blow to Netanyahu.

So now would be a good time to take a moment to pray:

“Lord, Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth (in Israel and within the Israeli government) as it is in heaven.” Let the leadership of your choice become the next Israeli government. Lord, we pray for a stable and secure government to lead the nation in the uncertain and unchartered waters of the future.

These are critical hours.
