The nomination, which includes the church and surrounding route taken by religious pilgrims, is the Palestinians’ first bid for inclusion on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. According to other UNESCO member states, such as the U.S.A, such status is premature as the Palestinian Territories currently do not qualify for UNESCO membership, and will do so only after a peace deal with Israel is reached.
