Iran security briefing (INSS)

By Marney Blom

The question looming over Israel was addressed by IDF Maj Gen. (ret) Giora Eiland, former National Security Advisor, and Dr. Ephraim Kam, IDF Colonel (res) Military Intelligence at today’s press conference at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) in Tel Aviv.

With only a year remaining before Iran is speculated to become capable of producing a nuclear bomb, the window of opportunity to curtail Iran’s nuclear program is closing with each passing day.  Yet Eiland believes Israel will continue to follow the precedent set by all previous Israeli prime ministers – only strike if the American Commander-in-Chief gives his approval.  The USA may be reluctant to get involved in yet another Mideast war, however  if attacking Iran becomes the only viable option, the Americans – with their superior military capabilities – may prefer to go it alone, rather than involve the Israelis.  If war does break out, contends Kam, it will most likely not become regional.

However, the upcoming American elections will  preclude a U.S. military strike  before November 2012, asserts Eiland.
