Only six months ago, political change was in the nation’s ether when Canada’s Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre, surged ahead in the polls. Then, the unimaginable happened: Trump’s tariffs and 51st state rhetoric along with the demise of the New Democratic Party (NDP) and the Green Party turned the political landscape into a perfect storm. The hopes of a vibrant new, “Canada First” Conservative government were suddenly thrust mercilessly into the abyss of liberal-land.

Now what? After ten troubling years of Trudeau governance, how does the nation navigate the turbulent waters of yet more liberal debt-building and nation-breaking politics?

On election night, I found myself at the headquarters of the Conservative candidate for Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore — Kathy Borrelli. I had volunteered to canvas the streets of Windsor and Tecumseh with the “long shot” candidate of a riding that has not been Conservative since 1935. At 1:30 am, an announcement was made — against all odds, Borrelli had won! Less than half a percent — 233 seats of the 61,000 ballots cast — had pushed her over the finish line!

Then, a second miracle: Conservative candidate — Harb Gill — won Windsor East, a riding that has been NDP (socialist party) for decades. Again, nobody saw that coming! Most of southwestern Ontario (also the area where EPIC — the 24/7 county-wide House of Prayer — is being developed) is no longer liberal/socialist. Instead, these ridings will now be governed by leaders whose party officially stands in support of Israel. This is the hand of God.

Despite these wins, the country as a whole has again fallen to the Liberals, albeit a Liberal minority government. The good news is that in Canada, governments unable to form a majority on election night only last for twelve to eighteen months, on average. There is hope that we may be back to the polls in a year’s time.

Another cause for hope is what took place on election day. It is unlikely that no previous day in Canadian history experienced as much prayer across the nation. Linked together through zoom, numerous groups prayed all day long with some meeting regularly weeks prior to election day. Could God be using the political challenges to bring us to our knees and pray with unprecedented fervour?

In addition to losing to PM Mark Carney and former economic adviser of Justin Trudeau, Pierre Poilievre suffered a humiliating blow when he lost his own riding of Carlton, Ontario. Almost forty-two percent of the country had voted for Conservative candidates and by extension this young, talented leader, who despite immense pressure, has stood solidly with Israel and its rights to defend itself after October 7th. Poilievre had even vowed to move Canada’s Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. Yet, Poilievre’s loss had some wondering if his days in Canadian politics were now numbered.

“Failure”, however, has a way of building character, humility, endurance and dependency on God, and it would be hard to imagine the political landscape without Poilievre. As expected, within days of the election, a Conservative Member of Parliament resigned, providing Poilievre another opportunity to regain a seat in parliament in an upcoming byelection. Damien Kurek, MP-Elect of the Battle River – Crowfoot riding will not be going to Ottawa this time around.

The results of the Canadian election 2025 were not what we had hoped for, yet I do feel optimistic. I have a new friend — Member of Parliament-Elect, Kathy Borrelli, and in  some small way, I feel I contributed to her victory and her historic win of Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakesore. Conservatives also gained twenty-four new MPs in a parliament of 343 seats, succeeded in ousting Justin Trudeau, “axing” the carbon tax and mapping out a viable economic plan to give hope and vision to the nation. Not too shabby, I’d say.

Many prayer warriors in Canada agree that God is not finished with us yet. If we continue to pray in humility, God promises to hear our prayers and heal our Land. (2 Chronicles 7:14). So when the time comes for Carney’s Liberal government to fall and we get another chance to go to the polls, I highly recommend we all get out there, volunteer, vote and pray. On our knees, God will change our nation.
