The story begins as the tribe takes revenge on a different branch of the Yanamamo. Each time a tribe is offended by another tribe, the offended tribe feels justified in killing members of the other tribe. The revenge works both ways, though. Knowing that another tribe may ambush them makes the tribes fearful to even work their fields. This warfare is encouraged by the shaman (witch doctors), who do drugs to facilitate contacting the spirit world. The spirits that they contact tell them that there’s an all powerful spirit, but that this all powerful spirit is the enemy of the Yanamamo. Therefore, the Yanamamo call the all powerful spirit, “The Enemy God”. A shaman’s world is challenged when he meets a missionary family. The missionary tells him that this “Enemy God” actually loves the Yanamamo. The shaman has to decide whether to continue to believe the spirits and follow the traditions of the elders, or if he should trust the missionary and see if the “Enemy God” will help him.
